In the wave of digital upgrading of Latin American power systems, the Nicaraguan Electricity Authority (ENATREL) is facing the key demand for rapid response to grid faults - as a core equipment to ensure the safety of transmission lines, the reclosing controller needs to be connected in real-time to the remote monitoring system to achieve precise coordination between fault detection and automatic reset. However, the monitoring center is built on a SCADA system in Mexico, and this cross continental deployment architecture brings three core challenges:
Communication differences: The on-site reclosing controller in Nicaragua is connected to the SCADA system in Mexico using the IEC60870-104 communication protocol. Due to the special requirements of the communication point table, we have customized it for the customer's needs. At the same time, due to the differences in communication module configurations in different countries, we have conducted extensive analysis and testing from parameter settings to port mapping;
Signal challenge: The communication link established through dedicated network cards between two locations is severely tested for data transmission stability due to the complex terrain and electromagnetic environment in Central America;
Communication gap: The project team includes technical personnel from China, Nepal, and Mexico, and language differences and work habits increase the difficulty of aligning requirements;
This project is not only related to the power supply reliability of Nicaragua's local power grid, but also an important practice for testing the interconnection capability of cross-border power equipment. Its successful implementation will provide a key reference for China Latin America power digital cooperation.
The core focus of transforming from traditional manual operation and maintenance to modern power grid management is to solve the common problems of extensive scheduling, frequent failures, high losses, and inefficient management in Nicaragua's national power grid, while laying a solid foundation for the subsequent upgrading of the power industry and economic development.
