As one of China's major grain-producing regions, Ningxia Yinchuan sees highly seasonal and concentrated agricultural irrigation power demand. During the peak irrigation season from April to July, surging grid loads significantly degrade power quality at rural distribution substations. The key challenges include:
Long Supply Lines: Typical end-of-line distribution substations serve areas with a supply radius exceeding 1.5 km, resulting in high line impedance and severe terminal voltage drop.
Severe Load Fluctuations: The simultaneous startup of high-power irrigation pumps generates heavy inrush currents, causing frequent and sharp voltage dips.
Poor End-of-Line Voltage Quality: Field measurements show that during peak irrigation periods, household voltage regularly drops to 175V–198V, well below the -10% lower limit specified in the national standard GB/T 12325-2008.
Consequence: Low voltage causes difficult pump startups, motor overheating and burnout, disrupted irrigation schedules, and a surge in customer complaints.

To address the "low voltage, long line" challenge, one RW LSVR Series Low Voltage Automatic Voltage Regulator developed and manufactured by Rockwell Energy Company was installed at each of two key points: the mid-line trunk section and the load center of a typical irrigation distribution substation in Yinchuan.
The RW-LSVR series continuously monitors the output terminal voltage. Its intelligent controller automatically switches the taps of an auto-coupled compensation transformer to adjust the turns ratio, applying series voltage compensation to counteract the impedance-induced voltage drop along the line:
Wide Regulation Range: Supports up to ±20% voltage compensation, restoring any input voltage above 180V back to nominal level.
High Output Accuracy: 3–7 step fine-grained regulation with output accuracy controlled within ±3%.
High Reliability Design: Rated IP43 for outdoor use, featuring a proprietary labyrinth ventilation channel and fine-dust-proof construction, combined with long-life magnetic latching relay switching — built to withstand Ningxia's harsh conditions of drought, extreme heat, and heavy dust.
Low-Loss Operation: Automatic bypass mode activates when voltage is within normal range, minimizing operating losses.

| Dimension | Details |
|---|---|
| Project Location | A distribution substation in Yinchuan, Ningxia (supply radius: 1.2 km) |
| Pre-Treatment Condition | End-of-line voltage measured at 175V during peak irrigation; 7.5 kW pumps required over 10 seconds to start; annual motor burnout rate: 3–5 units. |
| Deployment | One RW-LSVR-90-0.4/4 installed at the mid-line trunk section; one RW-LSVR-30-0.4/4 installed at the load center — both pole-mounted. |
| Measured Results | 1. Voltage Recovery: Household voltage stabilized at above 200V. 2. Efficiency Gain: Pumps start normally; irrigation efficiency improved by over 25%. 3. Economic Benefit: Zero motor burnouts recorded in the following year; substation line loss rate reduced by approximately 1.5%. |

Compared to traditional approaches such as reconductoring or adding distribution transformers, the RW-LSVR solution offers lower cost, faster deployment, and immediate results. It precisely addresses seasonal voltage fluctuations and measurably improves customer satisfaction metrics.
Stable voltage ensures safe and reliable operation of irrigation equipment, reduces motor repair and replacement costs, and provides dependable power support for agricultural output — particularly critical during drought periods when irrigation cannot be delayed.
